Agri ministers' meet to discuss truant monsoon

Union Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh has called a meeting, on Wednesday, of the agriculture and relief ministers of eleven states, which may be affected due to long dry spell in these states.

Singh, who wants to take stock of the contingency arrangements these state governments have made in the wake of the drought conditions due to long dry spells and inadequate rainfall, is also likely to also ask them to clarify the nature and quantum of assistance they would require.

The central government has identified certain action points that would be acted upon after consultation with these state governments to effectively deal with the situation, a agriculture ministry release said on Monday.

These action points relate to the review of the status of public distribution system in the affected states as well as arrangements of quick movements of food grains to the affected places, setting up of the fodder information centers within the Central Animal Husbandry Department and issuing guidelines about maintenance of cattle camps, updating of health contingency plan and conveying the same to the states among other things.

The states that have been invited include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Besides, officials of the union agriculture ministry, officials of the department of expenditure, food, rural development, department of drinking water, water resources, Power, Child and women and development and meteorology would also participate in the day-long meeting.
