President Narayanan hails Ambani's contribution to nation

President K R Narayanan on Sunday paid rich tributes to Reliance Industries Chairman Dhirubhai Ambani, saying he had played an important role in the country's economic growth and regeneration.

"His emergence as a leading figure in the corporate world has been cited as a remarkable example which needs to be studied in depth to highlight his important role in our country's quest for economic growth and regeneration," Narayanan said in a condolence message.

"Dhirubhai Ambani, hailing from a humble background, rose to become an eminent industrialist through his qualities of entrepreneurship and hard work," said the President.

"On this sad occasion, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and to his wide circle of friends and admirers," Narayanan said.

Ambani, 69, the founder-chairman of the Rs. 600-billion conglomerate, passed away late Saturday at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. He was admitted there June 24 after he suffered a brain stroke.
