India announces $10 mn assistance to Afghanistan

The government on Wednesday announced $10 million in assistance to Afghanistan for immediate purchase requirements of the war-ravaged country even as the two sides declared their resolve to eliminate terrorism and religious extremism in all its forms.

After a wide-ranging talks with visiting Head of the Afghan interim government Hamid Karzai, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also announced New Delhi's decision to contribute to the World Bank-managed Afghan Reconstruction Trust Fund.

Declaring India would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Afghanistan in the reconstruction of that country, Vajpayee said, ''We have offered $10 million to meet immediate purchase requirements of Afghanistan''.

The prime minister said New Delhi would assist Kabul in the fields of education, health, agriculture and information technology.

Both Vajpayee and Karzai asserted that forces of terrorism and religious extremism must be totally eliminated for peace and stability of the region.
