Drought picture far from real, says FM

BS Political Bureau in New Delhi

Finance Minister Jaswant Singh has said the grim and scary picture of the drought being projected throughout the country is far from real.

In his address to the Bharatiya Janata Party's intellectual cell on Saturday, Singh explained at length about the economic strength of the country, and said droughts and floods were routine features.

"Even the US is facing drought," he is believed to have remarked.

Singh said the economic strength of the country was adequate to cope up with the situation.

He also indicated the government would work out a long-term strategy to combat natural calamities like droughts and floods.

Dispelling the apprehension of intellectual cell members about the influx of Chinese goods, particularly toys, in the Indian market, Singh said it was a false impression. According to him, it was only a temporary phenomenon, even in the toys market, BJP sources said.

Singh further said multi-national corporations had changed themselves to suit Indian requirements, but could not upstage the domestic industry.

The 45-minute interactive session was part of an exercise to call a Cabinet minister to the party office every Saturday to brief the intellectual cell about the government's functioning.
