Maruti sales up 30% in 3 weeks: Khattar

Cut in prices of its bread and butter car, Maruti 800, drove the sales of the country's top auto maker up by 30 per cent.

''Sales have gone up by as much as 30 per cent in the last three weeks. I can see signs of a revival in the auto sector,'' Maruti Udyog Limited managing director Jagdish Khattar told reporters.

After flat market last year, sales of two-wheelers and trucks had picked up over the past few weeks, he said adding, "I hope the turn for cars would also come''.

Khattar said his company, which sold nearly 3.40,000 cars in the domestic market last fiscal, was working on a long-term strategy to revive car sales in the country.

The ''price rationalisation'' announced last month and the foray into the used car segment was part of that drive, he said.

''Nearly 600,000 new cars are sold in the country every year. We estimate the market for old cars is almost the same,'' he said. The MUL is opening 20 outlets in 18 cities to sell pre-owned cars this year.

The company has been selling nearly 200 cars per month from the eight outlets it had set up in the country since October for the sale of used cars.

Khattar said MUL does not plan to roll out any new models in the immediate future. ''We've already introduced five new models recently. We shall concentrate on them for the moment,'' he said.

The company has a portfolio of ten products currently.
