Musharraf may announce MFN status for India

The Pakistan commerce ministry has been asked to prepare a comprehensive report on trade relations with India amid speculation that President Pervez Musharraf might announce the most favoured nation status for New Delhi ahead of the summit-level talks.

The commerce ministry has also been asked to give details about the items which are currently on the trading list with India and proposals to improve trade between the two countries.

The issue of MFN would figure prominently if trade related issues are discussed between the two countries.

The Daily Nation, quoting official sources, said: ''We do not know whether issues of trade and MFN are going to be on the agenda when the two leaders meet in New Delhi."

India has accorded the MFN status to Pakistan, however, Pakistan has not granted the same for India so far.

Pakistan has 603 items on the trade list with India. The legal trade between the countries stands at Rs 10 billion, while illegal trade is estimated at more than Rs 90 billion.
