The Indian unit of the global technology consulting company Gartner Group Inc said on Wednesday that India recorded the highest Internet-user growth in the Asia-Pacific region in the current year.

"India has experienced the highest rate of growth in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of number of Internet users this year," Gartner India said in a statement.

It said the results were findings of survey undertaken in June-July 2000.

The study also showed India is the fifth largest Asia-Pacific Internet user market after China, Korea, Australia and Taiwan.

It said India had an estimated 3.1 million regular Internet surfers who surf for at least an hour a week.

The study showed online transactions have not yet gained acceptance amongst Indian Internet-users.

"Only 2.2 per cent of Indian surfers have ever paid online, while another 3.6 per cent have ever placed orders over the Net," it said.
