5 ways to jumpstart your job search

Kanika Jha*, a recent graduate from Delhi University stepped out of college with no professional experience but loads of confidence and enthusiasm. On the other hand, software engineer Chandan Kapoor who had four years of work experience was looking for a better job.

After about a month or so of fruitless search, Kanika and Chandan both realised that finding a new / better job is like matchmaking -- you need to find a profile that matches your education and skills. In Kanika's case, organisations were reluctant to hire a fresher, while Chandan couldn't seem to find a position that suited his skills. Do you find yourself ina similar predicament? Job search engines / Job supplements
Searching for a job has become easier over the last few years and search engines provide you with a lot of opportunities and choices. "If you have the skill we have the job" says Monster India.

Your success on job sites depends on the keywords that you use and also the frequency with which you update your resume online. Job portals give you the flexibility to look for a job at you convenience and also review the various profiles across industries.

Conventional mediums like job supplements also advertise vacancies and information around walk in interviews. "I go through the job supplements religiously every week just to get an idea of the skills and qualifications organisations are looking for. This helps me stay on my toes and constantly acquire any skills that the market demands," says Tushar Kohli, a team leader with a leading retail store.

Online networking
Business and career networking are the new buzzwords today. It's not surprising to see people land plum jobs and assignments using websites like linkedin.com, ryze.com, Facebook etc.

It is however important to project a professional image on these sites if you are looking for a job. Many organisations post their vacancies on several public forums on these networking sites and also visit your profile to get an understanding of your background and work experience.

Job fairs
Job fairs are a great platform especially for professionals with 0-2 years of work experience. It's an opportunity to meet several potential employers all under one roof. Job fairs also enable you to get exposed to various career options and meet fellow professionals from the industry.

"I interviewed with five different organisations in a job fair organised by the Times Group recently. While I received only two job offers, the experience made me realise my strengths and weaknesses," says Sahil Nagi, a Delhi based ITeS professional.

Recruitment consultants
Finding a job that fits right is not a very difficult task however it can be time consuming. Sometimes, it's a good idea to get in touch with people who make a living by helping people find the right jobs.

A consultant can analyse your background, help you prepare a career portfolio and also help you find the right job. Consultants are well networked in the industry and can keep you informed about new openings and trends in the job market.

Most consultants get their database from leading job portals so if you have posted your profile on these sites, it should be too long before you start getting calls.

Alumni networks
Check with your college if they have an active alumni network. You may be pleasantly surprised to find some of your seniors from school/ college working in decision-making positions in the organisations that you want to work with.

Send them an introductory mail highlighting your profile and the desired job profile. Most employers prefer to receive resumes either by fax or e-mail. Customise your resume along with a clear cover letter, outlining your interest in the field and that particular company.

It is always worth mentioning in your cover letter that you would like the opportunity to come down for a one-on-one interaction. Meeting in person is a very effective way to ensure that you are remembered and improves your chances of being hired. Remember, not all job profiles are advertised for and cold calling helps.

It's not always about being at the right place at the right time when it comes to finding the right job; most of the time it's about being ready. So reach out to potential employers through several channels and work towards finding your dream job.
