Thinking of a career in civil engineering but don't know the scope in India? Want a career as a stock broker, but don't know where to start?
TIME experts Sourajit Anthony Ghosh and Rahul Reddy chatted with GA readers on June 13 about these and many other issues.

Part I: Career options after Class XII
Immu asked, Dear Sir, I passed the HSC commerce exam with 70% this year and am looking for a BBA through correspondence. Kindly suggest few colleges/ institutions.
RAHUL REDDY answers, Please rethink the option of going for a correspondence course. In the job as well as post graduate sector there is a bias against correspondence courses.
kumar asked, Kindly tell me which is a better option after XII -- BE Computers, BTech Computers or BCA.
Sourajit Ghosh answers, Go in for a BE/ BTECH in a good college.
s asked, What is the status of civil engineering these days? Is it a good option to take?
RAHUL REDDY answers, While IT and computer science are generally the most sought after, other fields like mechanical, civil and production are making a strong comeback with good jobs and salaries particularly in real estate, construction and project management.
Tarun asked, I am getting admission in IIT and wanted to ask what are options after engineering?
RAHUL REDDY answers, There are three options popular after the IITs. There is management from the IIMs, campus placement which is getter better every year and the GRE, which enables you for an MS in USA.
komal asked, I have completed my 12th and am planning to do an BBA and MBA integrated 5-year full-time course. Is it a good idea to do the integrated course from ICFAI and what are the job prospects?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, There are better colleges like the IIMs and XLRI to do your MBA from later on, so right now focus on a good graduation from a good college (integrated degrees are not very recognised by the corporate world).
Geeta asked, How is bachelors in physical therapy as a course? What are the career prospects after that?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, It is a niche area. But with healthcare booming, there is a growing demand for it. Do your research before you decide to do the course.
sakshi asked, I wanted to know which branch is good for girls in the engineering field?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, IT-Computers Electronics is good.
ajinkya asked, I have got good marks in comp science and interested in automobiles too so which course should I go for? And am interested in car designing too!
Sourajit Ghosh answers, look at automobile engineering from a good college. Also mechanical engineers can get placed in automobile firms.
GAURAV asked, SIR, DO IT (programming jobs) and KPO research works have good starting salaries? And what are the KPO research works?
RAHUL REDDY answers, Typically, IT salaries for engineers can range from Rs 2.5 lakhs to Rs 6 lakhs per annum (about Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 gross per month). Most get about Rs 25,000 per month. For KPO, it really depends on which company and your area of expertise.
Tunti asked, What are the other best subjects to study along with English as honours?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, History, geography, political science, psychology or sociology. Try for a foreign language if possible, it will increase your employability.
saurabh asked, Can I do M.Tech after doing BE from any private college in information technology. If yes, what is the criterion?
RAHUL REDDY answers, Yes, MTech can be done after BE or BTech from any recognised engineering college including private colleges. Just make sure that the college is AICTE-recognised. For MTech, you need to write an all-India exam called GATE.
kritin asked, I would like to do a management course after 12th. Which course should I join?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, look at a BBA or BBS. There are good colleges in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai.
vdatar11 asked, I want to make a career in the stock market, which course should I do after 12th?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, You can do an online course like NCFM from NSEindia, and later on an MBA in finance.
Sasank asked, I've completed my 10+2, where I've opted for PCB. Unfortunately, I couldn't manage to secure an MBBS seat. For now, I do not want to waste a year just for giving entrances. I want to do Bio Technology or Bio Informatics. But I am not confident enough about the job opportunities once I complete it.
Sourajit Ghosh answers, Bio Informatics from a premium institute will get you a good job, but most careers in science needs higher studies.
Ameet S asked, How is the arts field?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, It's good. You can get into teaching/ lectureship, or associated research. You can also take up a foreign language. IT companies need experts in foreign languages.
Gops asked, What kind of jobs will I get if I do a BBA?
RAHUL REDDY answers, Typical jobs for a BBA are: Sales - Banks, financial services, automobiles services etc; Relationship management - Operations in banks, FIIs etc; Retail - management trainee; Media from newspapers to television.
pravesh asked, Is there any fire and safety college in India?
Sourajit Ghosh answers, There is the International Institute of Fire Engineering (Pune). The National Saftey Council of India (Mumbai) also provides some courses.
df asked, I wish to study law from NLSIU or NALSAR. I am currently in 12th. Please inform me about the scope in that field.
Sourajit Ghosh answers, Law has two divisions: corporate and civil. These days with the industry boom, there are a lot of opportunities in corporate law.
Ayo asked, I want to pursue adventure tourism management as a career option. How do I go about it? I have passed my 12th this year.
Sourajit Ghosh answers, BHU offers a 2-year diploma course in tourism management and also an MA in it. Also check out Delhi University and Kurukshetra University (Haryana).
