How safe is nightlife for women?

You love to party, enjoy a drink at the local pub, catch a late-night film or indulge in a quiet dinner at your favourite restaurant.

At times, by yourself. Nothing special about it, really.

Unless, of course, you are a young woman, never mind in Westernised Mumbai or New Delhi, or any other Indian city for that matter.

A few instances:

  • On New Year`s Eve a young NRI who went to a pub in Mumbai by herself found her drink laced with sedatives, and was raped by two men over two days.
  • In Delhi, a married woman out to buy vegetables was picked up in a car and raped.
  • In December 2005 a call centre employee was raped and murdered in Bangalore.
  • Before that a young girl who was returning home late at night after working at a call centre in Chennai was chased by some men in a car and was run over.

Makes one wonder, doesn`t it, if young girls can do things by themselves in this country?

Is it safe for women in India to visit a pub, disco or a nightclub alone? What can be done to make nightlife safer for them?
