Salman Khan may be in trouble with the Indian legal system and unpopular with a lot of people.

After a hit and run accident, when his Land Cruiser ran over five pavement dwellers, killing one and injuring four others, in a fit of drunken driving, Khan was released on a Rs 950 bail.

It now transpires that he was found without a driving license, and the Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving was registered under a certain Abdul Rahim.

Members of the film industry have their own take about the controversy:

Tanuja Chandra

Salman has got away with too much, courtesy our legal system. This time will be no exception.

Many car drivers get away with similar offences. Salman is paying the price of being famous. I am not saying that he should be excused, but I really pity him. Aishwarya Rai [Khan's one-time girlfriend] has a soft corner for him, else she would not have tolerated so much from him. This girl should come forward and rally around him. The family should lend full support. There is no reason why he will not come out of this terrible phase. Not so long ago, Sunjay Dutt was in a worse situation.

Salman will get away like Puru Raajkumar. I am sure about this. Why was he not tested for alcohol immediately after he ran over those poor people? In this country, cops can be bought and sold.

I do not know whether he and Aishwarya are on at this point of time. Even if they aren't, I don't think their break-up is responsible for his irresponsible behaviour. This is not the first time that he has landed himself in trouble. I think he is an unstable person. It is reflected onscreen too, where he is often obsessed with his physique. I think somewhere down the line, he started feeling he is larger than life and can get away with anything and everything.

Poonam Dhillon

Poonam Dhillon, former actress

I feel for Salman. He has suffered. Every wrong he does becomes a big controversy. But of course, I will not endorse drunken driving at any cost.

Rahul Roy

Rahul Roy, actor

It is bad timing. Everything seems to be falling around Salman and he is unable to lift himself. The first thing he needs to do is to compensate the victims' families. It would go a long way to redeeming his life.

Kunika

Kunika, actress

It is funny that Salman does not have a driving license. This bit really shocked me. All the same, it is an accident and not a planned act. I wish that the media underplays this a bit.

Inder Kumar

Inder Kumar, actor

I feel sad for Salman. He has had too much in the past few months. His reputation and career are going fast downhill.

Aarti Chhabria

Something is wrong with Salman's kundli (horoscope). He is undergoing a terrible phase which I would not wish for my worst enemy. The law will naturally take its course, but I hope he starts afresh. I like him, he is a cool guy.

Ruby Bhatia

Ruby Bhatia, former veejay

Salman has often slipped but never been rapped. The law of our land does not seem to be the same for all; some guys are above the law.
