Location: North India. The state shares its borders with Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Population: 2,10,83,000 Area: 94,163.00 sq km. The only state perhaps where land armies exist. The Bhumihars (the land owning community) have their armies and the backwards their own. Languages spoken: Mainly Hindi, though there are several dialects in use like Bhojpuri, Maithili and Maghi. Famous for: Its glorious history, the lawlessness and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Political muscle: 40 Lok Sabha members and 16 Rajya Sabha members represent Bihar in Parliament. Party in power: The Rashtriya Janata Dal led by Lalu Prasad Yadav. His wife Rabri Devi is the chief minister. Main challenger: The Lok Janshakti Party led by Ramvilas Paswan and the BJP-Janata Dal (United) combine. Interestingly, Paswan and Lalu are part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre. |
