With the assembly polls in Assam throwing up a fractured verdict, the Congress leadership on Thursday decided to despatch three senior leaders including Mohsina Kidwai and All India Congress Committee general secretary Digvijay Singh to Guwahati.

AICC secretary Chandan Bagchi, who is in charge of party affairs in Assam, said he and Digvijay Singh were leaving for the northeastern state on Thursday and Kidwai, who has been named the central observer, will go there on Friday.

The meeting of the newly elected Congress Legislature Party will be held at Guwahati on May 13 to elect its leader and Bagchi expressed confidence that the Congres would be able to again form government with the help of "like-minded" parties.

The AICC has already declared its readiness to share power in Assam, but said the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Brindaban Goswami- led Asom Gana Parishad were "untouchables".

Despite Tarun Gogoi being the incumbent chief minister, the party has not projected anyone for the top post in its campaign.
