The Election Commission has issued notices to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for allegedly using excess number of vehicles during electioneering in the assembly polls scheduled on Monday.

In two separate notices to the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the EC pointed out that Jayalalithaa had used nearly 80 vehicles during her visit to Krishnagiri district on May 1 and 2, adding, as per the standing instructions not more than three vehicles are allowed in a convoy.

"The party has neither taken the permission for using so many vehicles for the said campaign nor did the vehicles have permits exhibited on the windscreen, as prescribed by the commission," it said seeking an explanation from the party by Saturday evening.

Similarly, the EC noted the chief minister used a large number of vehicles and buntings, flags and posters in Park Town assembly constituency on May 3, the sources said.

The commission has sought an explanation in this case by Sunday.

In a notice to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the commission pointed out the use of as many as 34 vehicles by Union Communications Minister and DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran during electioneering in Krishnagiri district on May 3.

The commission has sought an explanation from the party by Saturday evening.
