TN: Women voters outnumber men in Phase 1

Women outnumber men in majority of constituencies going to polls in Tamil Nadu on May 8.

According to final electoral rolls, women have dominance in 180 out of the 234 constituencies. Of the total electorate of 46,361,952, the number of women voters is 23,377,773.

In as many as 12 of the 30 districts in the state, there is not a single constituency, which has more men than women. In the western region, all the constituencies in Theni, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Salem and Namakkal districts have more women voters.

Andipatty in Theni district, where Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is seeking re-election, has 89,928 men and 93,296 women voters - the difference being that of 3,368.

Women voters are more in 14 constituencies where her cabinet colleagues are contesting. Prominent among them is O Panneerselvam who has thrown his hat in the ring from Periyakulam where women outnumber men by 2,742.

Similarly, in the 'heartland' of the backward Vanniyar community, comprising Thiruvannamalai, Vellore and Perambalur districts, women are expected to play a dominant role in electing representatives.

However, in 10 out of the 14 constituencies in capital Chennai, where most of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam stalwarts are contesting, men outnumber women marginally.

In Chepauk, where DMK president M Karunanidhi will face the electorate, the number of men is slightly higher. It has 52,367 men and 51,807 women voters.

A similar situation prevails in Harbour, where DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan is contesting again. Even in Thousand Lights area, where DMK deputy general secretary M K Stalin has been fielded, male voters are more.

Apart from Chennai, Kanyakumari is the only district that has more constituencies where the number of male voters is higher. Men are more in six out of the seven constituencies in Kanyakumari.
