Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has lashed out at Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunandhi for his poll promise of giving free land to landless farmers saying it was an 'impossible' task to achieve.

"The DMK chief, who was the state's chief minister four times, should know how much land was available with the government to keep the poll promise," she said, addressing a series of campaign meetings in Tirunelveli district on Monday.

She said the government had to buy land during the last four years from private owners for distribution among Adidravidar women at 50 per cent cost, the All Indian Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam supremo said.

Jayalalithaa said of the 55 lakh acres of waste land in Tamil Nadu, only 3.57 lakh acres were under government control while the rest were with private parties.

"Karunanidhi was spinning yarn out of nothing.... The DMK leader's promise was like guiding a person to a village to which he did not want to go," she said.

The chief minister said the DMK chief had failed to 'appreciate' her government's scheme of Integrated Comprehensive Waste Land Development Programme to help landless farmers through private participation.
