The political developments in Jharkhand had its echo in Parliament on Friday, as both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were thrown into turmoil by the National Democratic Alliance members.

The NDA members demanded immediate central intervention to ensure that democracy functioned in the state.

The matter was raised during Zero Hour in both Houses.

In the Lok Sabha, Bharatiya Janata Party deputy leader V K Malhotra said a party member of Parliament was injured in lathi-charge and tear-gassing outside the assembly in Ranchi.

In the Upper House, Leader of the Opposition Jaswant Singh appealed to the Centre to intervene in the matter, as the Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned repeatedly on Friday, the day of the floor test.

"Most humiliating and disturbing developments are taking place," Singh said. His party colleague Sushma Swaraj wanted an assurance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Law Minister H R Bhardwaj said he was not aware of the happenings in the Jharkhand assembly. He, however, emphasised that the government wanted the democratic process to be followed in the state.

Dissatisfied with the response, NDA members rushed to the well leading to the adjournment of the House after listed special mentions were tabled.
