'Lalu demanded fresh polls in Bihar'

March 07, 2005 20:28 IST

Senior Congress leader and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee [ Images ] on Monday said Rashtriya Janata Party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav [ Images ] had called him and urged fresh elections in Bihar.

Mukherjee added that he had told Lalu that it would be impossible to hold fresh elections immediately as it required approval from Parliament.

He added that the present political scenario demanded President's rule in the state.

"The vote-on-account is passed before the term of the assembly ends, but that is not possible now as the term of the 12th state assembly ended on March 7. Since none of the political alliances can gather a majority, President's rule is inevitable," he said.
