Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibtey Razi on Monday asked the Bharatiya Janata Part-Janata Dal (United) to decide on its leader before staking to form the government.
The alliance, which has 37 seats in the 81-member assembly, met the governor at the Raj Bhavan to stake its claim.
"The governor assured us that he would definitely look into our request in forming the new government after we elect the leader," BJP general secretary Rajnath Singh said.
Asked whether the alliance had the requisite number, Singh said, "We have briefed the governor. We are the single largest alliance after the election results. We should be given a chance to prove our majority on the floor."
"We have also informed the governor about the support of a number of Independent candidates," Singh added.
However, he did not divulge the names of the candidates supporting the alliance.
