The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Thursday hailed Congress president Sonia Gandhi's decision to propose Manmohan Singh's name for the prime minister's post.
"Sonia Gandhi has done a wonderful job for the Sikh community. With a Sikh prime minister leading the nation, all over the world wherever the community lives it will get due regard," SGPC chief secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta said in Amritsar.
"This action of Sonia Gandhi has applied balm on the deep wounds of Sikh masses after Operation Blue Star and the anti-Sikh riots of '84," he said.
The SGPC was optimistic that the PM-designate would initiate talks with Pakistan on the upkeep of gurdwaras.
