SGPC hails Sonia Gandhi

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Thursday hailed Congress president Sonia Gandhi's [ Images ] decision to propose Manmohan Singh's [ Images ] name for the prime minister's post.

"Sonia Gandhi has done a wonderful job for the Sikh community. With a Sikh prime minister leading the nation, all over the world wherever the community lives it will get due regard," SGPC chief secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta said in Amritsar [ Images ].

"This action of Sonia Gandhi has applied balm on the deep wounds of Sikh masses after Operation Blue Star [ Get Quote ] and the anti-Sikh riots of '84," he said.

The SGPC was optimistic that the PM-designate would initiate talks with Pakistan on the upkeep of gurdwaras.
