Congress to get fresh letters of support from allies

A move is afoot by Congress to get fresh letters of support from pre-poll allies and other coalition partners to back a government headed by former Union finance minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] in the wake of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's [ Images ] refusal to become the prime minister.

Senior Congress leaders have been sent to various allies with the request for fresh letters as the earlier ones were for a government headed by Gandhi, sources said.

The party expects to secure them by afternoon and will then be handed over to President A P J Abdul Kalam [ Images ], who is expected to invite Singh to form the new government.
