Following in the footsteps of his father, Karnataka Minister for Municipal Administration Kumar Bangarappa on Wednesday resigned from the Congress and is all set to join Bharatiya Janata Party.

"As a dutiful and faithful son to my father, who is my political leader and guide, I have decided to resign from the ministry and the Congress," he told reporters in Bangalore.

The development was expected after his father, former chief minister S Bangarappa, announced his decision to quit the ruling Congress and praised Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Kumar Bangarappa echoed his father's thoughts.

Praising the BJP, he said, "It is a more social and completely progressive political party while the Congress lacks vision and is becoming smaller day by day."

The actor-turned-politician claimed that the Congress would suffer a major dent in the coming elections with their (Bangarappa and son) quitting the Congress along with 'lakhs of supporters'.

Chief Minister S M Krishna swiftly recommended that Governor T N Chaturvedi accept Kumar Bangarappa's resignation.
