The returning officer of South Chennai constituency was flabbergasted when an independent candidate submitted his deposit amount of Rs 10,000 in one-rupee coins.

Kuppal Devadas, from Mandaveli area in Chennai, put the deposit amount in five gunny bags, each carrying 2,000 one-rupee coins, which he had obtained from the Reserve Bank of India.

Returning Officer Sharmedra Pratap Yadav had no choice but to accept the five bags of coins before the deadline for filing of nominations.

Friday is the last day for filing papers in all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu where polling will be held on May 10.

Yadav, an IAS officer, heaved a sigh of relief when the candidate accepted his request and later took back the coins and replaced them with currency notes.
