Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi on Sunday night underwent neuro-surgery at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai for treatment of injuries sustained in a road accident near Raipur.

Considering the severity of the injuries, he had been flown to Mumbai in a Chhattisgarh government aircraft.

He has suffered serious injurious to his head and spine. When he was brought to Mumbai, he was conscious but his legs were paralysed. A five-member panel had been formed to examine him. After ascertaining the exact nature of his injuries, doctors in Mumbai operated on him. The operation was successful.

He is now in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, cardiologist B K Goyal said.

Jogi is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Mahasamund where he is pitted against the Bharatiya Janata Party's V C Shukla. The accident occurred in the early hours when he was heading for an election meeting. It appears highly unlikely that he will be able to resume campaigning in the near future.

The accident is a severe setback to the Congress, which had recently revoked Jogi's suspension in connection with the cash-for-MLAs scam to strengthen its electoral prospects in Chhattisgarh.
