In the countdown to the general election, Bharatiya Janata Party chief M Venkaiah Naidu takes time out to tackle six questions from Chief Correspondent Tara Shankar Sahay.
What campaign accessory do you always travel with?
For a busy person like me, most things are dispensable. However, I keep my mobile phone within easy reach to take calls from our party leadership. Besides, of course, I am always mentally alert.
What do you do before you set out for the day?
I wake up early in the morning because there is so much work to be done. I do some meditation to clear the mind and begin the day afresh.
How do you keep fit?
I think positive thoughts go a long way in keeping a person physically fit. I don't have a negative approach. I believe that a healthy mind gives you a healthy body.
What do you do to keep your voice in fine fettle?
Talking constantly and delivering numerous speeches all over the country sometimes result in a hoarse throat. But it can be tackled by gargling with a saltwater solution. Besides, there is an Andhra [Pradesh] specialty that I like -- it is a sweet and sour drink that clears the throat.
What is your favourite mode of transport during elections?
As president of the BJP, I have used various modes of transport including helicopters and planes. But I prefer to travel by road in an open jeep or vehicle so that I can have maximum contact with the people.
If there is one thing you can avoid during elections, what would it be?
If there is one thing I hate, it is confusion and waywardness. Our tasks are specific. Every party member has a job to do and he can contribute constructively. The BJP is a cadre-based party. Our insistence on discipline is absolutely non-negotiable.
