In 1998, no one gave the modest, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Miranda House-educated, politician-by-default a chance to survive in the whirlpool of the capital's politics. Five years later, Shiela Dikshit has had the last laugh. Barring a major calamity in the fortnight before the December 1 election to the Delhi assembly the National Capital Territory's chief minister is widely expected to retain power.

Dikshit is seen here waving to supporters after filing her nomination papers at the Patiala House courts in New Delhi on Friday, November 14.
