Five BSF jawans and a civilian driver were on Wednesday killed and three jawans injured in an ambush by suspected insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura at Shantarampara in West Tripura district, police said.
A group of armed insurgents showered a hail of bullets on a vehicle carrying BSF jawans at Shantarampara under Jirania police station. The jawans were returning to Agartala after poll duty at about 1630 IST.
Six persons were killed on the spot and three were injured, one of them seriously, the police said.
The ultras managed to loot a weapon from the vehicle.
Police and para-military forces launched a combing operation in the area to nab the culprits.
