Srinagar Times editor shot at

Editor of leading Urdu daily Srinagar Times, Sofi Ghulam Mohammed, was shot at by unidentified gunmen in his house in Dalgate area in Srinagar on Tuesday.

Sofi sustained a bullet injury in his hand and was rushed to a hospital, where he was given first-aid and discharged.

Sofi's personal security officer, Ali Mohammed, was also injured in the firing.

The attack followed a warning by the United Jehad Council asking "local press to mend ways or face the consequences."

Apparently, the UJC is upset with the glowing accounts of Monday's peaceful polling in the first phase of election in the state.

Sofi told journalists that two youths came to his office located adjacent to his house in the evening. "As we were talking, one of them pulled out a gun. I tried to run and the bullet hit me in the hand. On hearing the shot, my police guard rushed in and he too was hit by a bullet," the editor said.

No militant group has yet owned responsibility for the attack.
