A brief history
The Oval is the oldest Test match venue in England, and the place where the Ashes originated in 1882. The area that is now one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world was originally a market garden and was converted to a cricket ground in March 1845, requiring 10,000 turfs from Tooting Common and £300 to convert The Oval into a cricket ground. It became the home of Surrey County Cricket Club on 19 October 1845.
