About the ground :

Mumbai's contribution to the develpoment of Indian cricket is well-known. The city has seen Test matches played at three different grounds. The Bombay Gymkhana ground hosted the first ever Test in India, in 1933-34, against England.

After World War-II, the Brabourne Stadium hosted 17 Tests. It is owned by a private club, the Cricket Club of India. A dispute over allocation of seats to the Bombay Cricket Association resulted in an impasse and the BCA decided to built a stadium of its own.

S K Wankhede, a cabinet minister in the state of Maharashtra then, was the president of the BCA. He decided that the BCA should have its own stadium. In a year's time, less than a mile away from the Brabourne, the Wankhede stadium was constructed.

Interestingly, the first international match to be played at the venue was the fifth and final Test between India and the West Indies, in January 1975. Since then 18 more Tests have been played there.
