Australia [ Images ] all-rounder Shane Watson [ Images ] was fined 10 per cent of his match fee for verbal abuse during the third Test against India [ Images ], the International Cricket Council [ Images ] said on Thursday.
Indian double centurion Gautam Gambhir [ Images ] faces the more serious charge of elbowing the Australian in the incident on Wednesday but will know the outcome of his hearing on Friday.
The two players appeared for a disciplinary hearing before match referee Chris Broad.
"After considering the evidence, Broad found Watson guilty of verbally engaging with Gambhir in a manner that was not in keeping the spirit of cricket," the ICC [ Images ] said in a statement.
If found guilty, in-form Gambhir, whose double century put the hosts in control of the test, could be fined between 50 percent to his entire match fee and/or banned for one Test or two one-day internationals.
Gambhir elbowed Watson as he took a run after the bowler gestured and appeared to say something to him before the tea interval on the first day on Wednesday.
