Kumble retains eighth place in rankings

Anil Kumble [ Images ] retained eighth place among the bowlers but Sachin Tendulkar [ Images ] dropped a rung to 14th in the batting chart, in the ICC [ Images ] Test rankings, issued on Tuesday.

Kumble has 708 points, one less than Sri Lanka's [ Images ] Chaminda Vaas [ Images ], in the bowling rankings, which is headed by another Sri Lankan, Muttiah Muralitharan [ Images ] (897).

Among batsmen, Tendulkar leads a pack of five Indians in the top-20.

The master batsman occupies 14th place with 704 points; he is followed by Rahul Dravid [ Images ] (15th), Virender Sehwag [ Images ] (17th), Sourav Ganguly [ Images ] (18th) and VVS Laxman [ Images ] (19th) -- who all dropped a rung.

Australia's [ Images ] Andrew Symonds and Englishman Andrew Strauss benefited from their match-winning knocks against the West Indies [ Images ] and New Zealand [ Images ] respectively and jumped eight and seven places in the batting chart.

Symonds moved up to 12 while Strauss, who scored a crucial 106 in the second innings of the second Test against New Zealand at Old Trafford, leapt to 16.

The batting rankings are still headed by two Australians -- Michael Hussey [ Images ] in first place and his captain, Ricky Ponting [ Images ], in second.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara [ Images ] is close behind in third, with Mohammad Yousuf [ Images ] of Pakistan in fourth and South Africa's [ Images ] Jacques Kallis [ Images ] in fifth.

Meanwhile, following a brilliant second-innings haul of 6 for 37, England's [ Images ] left-arm finger spinner Monty Panesar [ Images ] moved up five places to 11th among bowlers.
