India elect to bat in first ODI

India [ Images ] captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [ Images ] won the toss and decided to bat first in the tri-series opener against Australia [ Images ] in Brisbane [ Images ] on Sunday.

India handed Bengal middle order batsman Manoj Tiwary his one-day international debut while leaving out Suresh Raina [ Images ], Dinesh Karthik [ Images ], Piyush Chawla [ Images ], Praveen Kumar [ Images ], Munaf Patel [ Images ] and the injured Yuvraj Singh [ Images ].

Matthew Hayden [ Images ] also missed out because of injury but skipper Ricky Ponting [ Images ] was declared fit for the match. The hosts included all-rounder James Hopes [ Images ], with Ashley Noffke making his debut.
