Don Bradman's baggy green cap which he wore in the 1948 tour of England where he scored a duck in his final innings to miss out on a Test average of 100 has been put on auction but the initial interest has been lukewarm.
The baggy green, which was gifted by Bradman to the son of an English friend but later did the rounds in Australian museums, has a reserved price of $ 450,000 and is estimated to fetch $ 600,000.
Auctioneer Charles Leski said although there has been worldwide interest in the auction, there have been no offers yet for the cap which Bradman wore when he captained the 1948 Invincibles Ashes tour of England.
Leski told the Nine Network that Bradman gave the cap to the son of his English friend Richard Robins whom he saw playing backyard cricket with a makeshift cap.
Robins Jr owned the hat until 2003 when he agreed to sell it to an Australian and since then it has been on show in several museums Down Under.
"The estimate is $ 600,000 -- it's a pretty expensive piece of millinery -- with a reserve of $ 450,000," Leski said.
"I'm surprised to tell you that we haven't had any bids. We've had a lot interest -- this is a story that's gone around the world and back several times."
Australia were undefeated in the 1948 tour and Bradman scored two centuries, and a duck in his final innings, leaving him with a Test average of 99.94.
