Orissa lost three wickets in last eight balls of the day to squander the initiative after bowling out Mumbai for a paltry 180 on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group 'A' match in Cuttack on Friday.
Having restricted the star-studded Mumbai batting line-up, Orissa were tottering at three for three at stumps on the opening day.
To make matters worse for the hosts, captain and key batsman Shiv Sundar Das, having sustained an injury to his right hand while fielding, is unlikely to play further.
Basant Mohanty was Orissa's star performer today, bagging five wickets for 50, while veteran Debasis Mohanty displayed a tidy bowling performance, bagging three for 28 from 21 overs which saw 11 maidens.
Electing to bat, the visitors lost three quick wickets as they were reduced to 10 for three in 9.4 overs with Basant and Debasis firing on all cylinders.
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer (18) was trapped by Basant, while his partner Sahil Kukreja (2) too became a victim to the Orissa youngster.
Debasis used the seaming Barabati track to the fullest as the former India speedster claimed in-form Ajinkya Rahane (1) who edged to Shiv Sundar Das at the slips.
However, a fourth wicket partnership (84 runs) between veteran Amol Muzumdar (34) and wicketkeeper batsman Vinayak Samant (46) rescued Mumbai who crossed 100 runs in 56 overs.
Once Muzumdar and Samant were sent to the pavilion, courtesy Basant, wickets fell like nine pins as 37 times Ranji champions Mumbai collapsed in 85 overs.
Brief Scores: Mumbai 180 (Vinayak Samant 46; Basant Mohanty 5/50) vs Orissa 3 for 3.
