South Africa [ Images ] has been asked to nominate the acting president of the International Cricket Council [ Images ] (ICC [ Images ]) following the death of Percy Sonn last month.

The ICC said on Wednesday its Board unanimously approved a recommendation for Cricket South Africa (CSA) to nominate a candidate to assume the role until the ICC annual conference of 2008, which would have been the end of Sonn's two-year term.

"The Governance Review Committee (GRC), following its meeting in Cape Town on Friday 1 June, made the recommendation and it has been unanimously approved by the ICC Board," cricket's world governing body said in a statement.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed [ Images ] added: "It's appropriate that CSA should make this nomination and I have no doubt that it will put forward a worthy successor to Percy Sonn, who served the ICC so well during his time in office."

Sonn, a key figure in the racial integration of the game in his native South Africa, died in a Cape Town hospital on May 27 at the age of 57 following a colon operation.

He had succeeded Ehsan Mani as ICC president in June 2006 after two years as the governing body's vice-president.
