Piyush Chawala (82) and TM Srivastava (81) helped Uttar Pradesh [ Images ] score an impressive 293 for six wickets on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League - Group B match against Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Electing to bat first, the the visitors lost their opener RP Srivastava in the first over itself, but Chawla and Srivastava played a steady knock to get them out of trouble.

Chawla's 82 included 10 fours and a six while Srivastava hit nine boundaries. Captain Mohammed Kaif scored 37 while Suresh Raina [ Images ] contributed 35.

For the hosts, Vishal Sharma, who made his first class debut, claimed two wickets for 78 runs. S M Shoaib also picked up a couple of wickets while MP Arjun and PP Ojha claimed a scalp each.

Amir Khan [ Images ] (44) and P Kumar (7) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.
