Australia's captain Ricky Ponting said the self-belief of his players bailed the team out of difficult situations and helped them clinch the DLF Cup tri-series.

He said his team has some good players who had enough confidence in themselves to overcome adverse situations and emerge winners.

"It's the self belief. There are a lot of good players in the team and they believe in their abilities," he said after Australia inflicted a 127-run defeat on the West Indies in the final to win the tournament.

Ponting said the various experiments with the line-up helped the team test its ability.

"The wicket here was not very easy. We did some experimentation and that has come out good," he said.

Heaping praise on Brett Lee, who captured 12 wickets in three matches, Ponting said the speedster "is a great asset to the side".

"He is the best one-day international bowler who can bat lower down the order."

Despite the heavy defeat, West Indies captain Brian Lara praised his teammates for their showing in the tournament.

"We were happy to restrict a team like Australia to 240. The boys have done pretty well," he said.

The ace batsman, however, admitted that they need to work on their batting.

"Definitely we have to rework (in this area). We have to work hard and get things right," he said.

Lara welcomed the West Indies Cricket Board's decision to extend their stay in Malaysia to prepare for the defence of the Champions Trophy.

"It's a good that we will stay here for the next 5-6 days during which we can prepare for the Champions Trophy in India next month," he said.

Lee, who bagged both the man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series awards, gave credit to the coaching staff for his success in the tri-series.

"I must give credit to the coaching staff for this. Our preparation has been the best in recent times. And it is great to be with such a squad," he said.

He said he is eager to tour India and take part in the forthcoming Champions Trophy, a tournament they are yet to win.

"I am looking forward to going to India. We will take a break and regroup before playing in the Champions Trophy," he said.
