- The second-wicket partnership of 174 runs between Chris Gayle [ Images ] and Dwayne Bravo [ Images ] in the Champions Trophy [ Images ] match just failed to beat the second-wicket record stand for the West Indies against England. Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan [ Images ] had added 187 at Lord's in 2004.

- Chris Gayle (101) scored his second hundred against England in 13 matches and 14th of his career in 149 matches.

- Six of Gayle's hundreds have come in LOST matches -- most for a West Indian. Carl Hooper and Brian Lara [ Images ] are joint-second with three hundreds apiece.

- In all ODIs, only India's [ Images ] Sachin Tendulkar [ Images ] (11) has scored more hundreds in lost matches than Gayle. England's opener Marcus Trescothick [ Images ] also has a tally of six hundreds in lost matches, while Zimbabwean Alistair Campbell and South African Herschelle Gibbs [ Images ] have seen their respective sides losing games five times in matches where they scored a hundred.

- Dwayne Bravo (112*) scored his maiden hundred in his 54th match. His previous highest was an unbeaten 62 against India at Port-of-Spain on 28-05-2006.

- Gayle performed the all-round feat of scoring a hundred and capturing three wickets in the same match for the third time in his career. The other such instances were against Zimbabwe (112* & 4-24) at Harare in 2003-04 and against England (132* & 3-57) at Lord's in 2004.

- Gayle's three instances of scoring a hundred and taking three wickets in the same match are the most by any player in ODI history. Gayle was earlier at level with Viv Richards [ Images ], Sanath Jayasuriya [ Images ], Nathan Astle and Shoaib Malik [ Images ] with two such instances.

- Playing for the first time against the West Indies Kevin Pietersen [ Images ] scored an unbeaten 90. His innings is now the highest by an England player on his debut innings against the West Indies, surpassing Derek Randall's 88 at Lord's in 1976.

- The West Indies' loss provided the 14th instance of a side losing a match in which its two batsmen scored hundreds. It was the first such instance for West Indies.

- By achieving the target, England registered its biggest successful chase against West Indies. They had scored 265-3 to beat the West Indies in a 55-over game at Lord's in 1991.

- It was also England's second biggest successful chase against any country in a 50-over game after the 306-5 against Pakistan at Karachi in 2000-01.

- Interestingly nine of last ten games between England and West Indies have won by side batting second! In one match no result was possible because of weather-gods.

- Gayle provided only the second instance in ICC [ Images ] Champions Trophy's history of a player from losing side winning man of the match award. Zimbabwe's E Chigumbura is the only other player to do so. Playing against Sri Lanka [ Images ] at the Oval in 2004 Chigumbura won the award for his all-round performance of 57 runs and 3-37 despite his side losing the match by 4 wickets.

- England's win means that West Indies will finish second in the Group A (irrespective of what is the outcome of India-Australia match) and will play South Africa [ Images ] in the second semifinal at Jaipur [ Images ] on November 2.
