South Africa elect to bat

South Africa captain Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan in a Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali on Friday.

The match is a virtual quarter-final contest, with the winner advancing to the last four, joining New Zealand who have already advanced from the group.

South Africa left out spin bowler Robin Peterson from the team that defeated Sri Lanka by 78 runs on Tuesday, replacing him with pacer Charl Langeveldt.

Pakistan also made one change in its team that was beaten by New Zealand, replacing pace bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan with Yasir Arafat.

Both teams have one win from two previous matches.

Pakistan: Younis Khan (captain), Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Yasir Arafat, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Umar Gul.

South Africa: Graeme Smith (captain), Boeta Dippenaar, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, A B de Villiers, Justin Kemp, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Charl Langeveldt, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini.
