South Africa captain Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to field in the Group B ICC Champions Trophy league match against New Zealand in Mumbai on Monday.
New Zealand's Scott Styris failed a fitness test after a hamstring twinge during the warm-up phase and was left out along with fast bowler Shane Bond, who was ruled out on Sunday itself because of stiffness in the back.
Pace bowler Mark Gillespie also did not find a place in the final eleven.
South Africa omitted Loots Bosman, Abraham De Villiers and Charl Langeveldt.
Pakistani Elite panel umpire Asad Rauf, who was the third umpire for the match, had to return home following the demise of his mother and Rudi Koertzen is officiating in his place, the ICC announced.
