  • Chris Gayle was playing his 150th match. He became 88th player to do so.
  • Shivnaraine Chanderpaul completed his 6,000 runs in one-day internationals when his score reached 16. He became 34th batsman overall and only the fifth West Indian to do so.
  • The century partnership between Gayle and Chanderpaul was only the second century partnership for the opening wicket in this edition of Champions Trophy. Interestingly the same pair was involved in the only other three-figure stand! Gayle and Chanderpaul had added 164 runs without being separated against Bangladesh at this same venue on 11-10-2006.
  • Chris Gayle made a plethora of records during his innings of 133*. We take a look:
    • On 10, Gayle completed his 1,000 runs in the year 2006. He became fourth batsman to do so this year after Kumar Sangakkara (1,208), Mahela Jayawardene (1,147) and Sanath Jayasuriya (1,041).

    • For the second time in his career Gayle reached the 1,000-run mark in a calendar year. The previous such occasion for him was in 2002 when he accumulated 1,097 runs in 23 matches. Gayle is only the second West Indian after Desmond Haynes to aggregate 1,000 runs in a calendar year on two occasions.

    • On 45, Gayle became the highest run-scorer in a single edition of Champions Trophy, surpassing India's Sourav Ganguly's aggregate of 348 runs (from four games) in 2000-01 edition.

    • Gayle's second six in the match (off the bowling of Kallis) was his 20th six on Indian soil - most by any West Indian. He went ahead of Viv Richards, who had a tally of 19 sixes in 19 innings. Gayle, on the other hand, did so in just 14 innings. Among all foreign players, only one - Pakistan's Shahid Afridi - has hit more sixes on Indian soil than Gayle. Afridi's tally stands at 24 sixes from 19 innings.

    • Gayle's third six in the match (off Peterson) was also his 11th boundary shot in the innings. With this he became the highest boundary-hitter in Champions Trophy matches moving ahead of India's Sourav Ganguly's tally of 83 boundaries (66 fours & 17 sixes) from 11 innings. Gayle, at the end of this match, has an aggregate of 93 boundaries (82 fours & 11 sixes) from 13 appearances.

    • On 75, Gayle became the second batsman to aggregate 600 runs in Champions Trophy after India's Sourav Ganguly (665 runs in 11 innings).

    • On 96, Gayle took his aggregate in this series to beyond 400 (from 7 games). He became first batsman in Champions Trophy history to aggregate 400 runs in a single tournament.

    • On 100, Gayle scored his 15th ODI hundred, his third against South Africa and his fourth in the year 2006.

    • The hundred was also Gayle's third in this edition of Champions Trophy. He thus became the first batsman to score three hundreds in a single edition of Champions Trophy.

    • On 113, Gayle achieved the highest score by a West Indian in Champions Trophy, surpassing Dwayne Bravo's unbeaten 112 against England at Ahmedabad on October 28.

    • On 124, Gayle recorded the highest individual score in this edition of Champions Trophy, surpassing Bangladesh's Shahriar Nafees' 123 (not out) against Zimbabwe at Jaipur on October 13.

  • The opening partnership of 196 runs between three players (Gayle / Chanderpaul / Sarwan) is the highest for any wicket in ICC Champions Trophy. The previous best was 192 run-partnership for the first wicket between Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly for India against England at Colombo RPS on 22-09-2002 and also between Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds for West Indies (for first wicket again) against Bangladesh at Southampton on 15-09-2004.
  • Brian Lara's only four in his short innings was his 1,000th four in one-day internationals. He became fourth batsman to do so after Sachin Tendulkar (1,542), Sanath Jayasuriya (1,244) and Adam Gilchrist (1,013).
  • West Indies reached the final, which is third such occasion for them in ICC Champions Trophy. They had played in 1998-99 (losing to South Africa) and 2004 (winning against England) finals.
  • The man of match award was Gayle's 17th in the career and fourth in this Champions Trophy.
