  • The third wicket partnership of 66 runs between Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn took their partnership aggregate to 3,015 in 62 innings. Ponting-Martyn became seventh Australian pair and 21st in all ODIs to aggregate 3,000 runs in partnerships. Incidentally Indian pair of Ganguly-Tendulkar holds the top-slot among the most successful pairs in ODIs. Ganguly-Tendulkar pair has aggregated 7,035 runs in 153 partnerships for different wickets. No other pair has managed even 6,000.

  • Incidentally Ponting-Martyn pair is the most successful third-wicket pair in ODI history. These two have aggregated 2,700 runs in 54 innings for the third wicket at an average of exactly 54. Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene is the only other pair to aggregate 2,000 runs for the third wicket.

  • Kyle Mills (4-38) returned second best figures of his career after his 4-14 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2004.

  • The 103-run partnership (off 126 balls) between Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori is New Zealand's best for the seventh wicket against Australia. The pair obliterated the previous record stand of 89 runs between Chris Harris and Dion Nash at Auckland in 1998. There have been only two higher partnerships for New Zealand for the seventh wicket in all ODIs against all opponents.

  • The above partnership is also the highest for seventh wicket in a Champions Trophy match expunging the 92-run partnership between MA Ouma and BJ Patel for Kenya against India at Southampton in 2004.

  • Daniel Vettori's 79 equalled the highest score by a number 8 batsman on Indian soil. Pakistan's Wasim Akram had also made an identical score against Sri Lanka at Visakhapatnam in 1999.

  • The wicket of James Franklin was 50th for Shane Watson. He became 177th bowler overall and 31st Australian to do so.

  • By losing this match, Stephen Fleming got an entirely unwanted record on his name. He has now lost 96 matches as New Zealand's captain - most by any captain in ODIs. Fleming was earlier at level with Arjuna Ranatunga with 95 defeats.

  • Australia qualified for the Champions Trophy final for the first time ever.

  • Glenn McGrath won his 12th Man of the Match award - his third against New Zealand.
