Wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher will lead South Africa in the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka, Cricket South Africa said on Monday.
Chairman of selectors Haroon Lorgat said Ashwell Prince, who became the first coloured cricketer to lead South Africa in the preceding Test series, will remain in the 14-man ODI squad.
"With Ashwell not a certainty in our one-day side, we have asked Boucher to lead the team," Lorgat said in the CSA statement.
Graeme Smith, the original skipper, was ruled out of the series after suffering an ankle injury while jogging in his native Cape Town.
Vice-captain Jacques Kallis was already out with an injury.
The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka and India, will be played from August 14 to 29.
South Africa squad: Mark Boucher (captain), Boeta Dippenaar, Loots Bosman, Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers, Shaun Pollock, Johan van der Wath, Robin Petersen, Andrew Hall, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Ashwell Prince, Roger Telemachus and Thandi Tshabalala.
