Fiery spells by Sanjay Gill (6 for 20) and Pankaj Singh (4 for 26) on a green-top wicket helped Rajasthan take an upperhand at the close of the first day's play in their Ranji Trophy Plate group semifinal tie against Orissa at the Mansarovar Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday.

Rajasthan skipper Ajay Jadeja elected to field after calling the coin correctly and the host team's medium pacers took full advantage of the grass on the wicket and the morning dew.

Both Gill and Singh tormented Orissa batsmen bundling them out for 94 in the first innings.

Rajasthan showed better application to take first innings lead on the first day. They were 108 for 5 when stumps were drawn for the day, with Nikhil Doru (27) and Jadeja (4) at the crease.

Orissa skipper Debasis Mohanty (3 for 18) also made early inroads into Rajasthan batting line-up. But useful contributions by Gagan Khoda (37) and Doru prevented any immediate damage.

Earlier, former Indian opener S S Das (13) and Paresh Patel (18) played well as the visitors were set for a good start. Once Gill gave the breakthrough by scalping Das at the team total of 21, Orissa batters fell like a house of cards.

Subit Biswal (32) was the highest scorer for the visitors.
