Leg-spinner Anil Kumble and paceman Ashish Nehra were rested while Sachin Tendulkar, who will make a comeback after a long injury lay-off, was named in the India Seniors' team for the N K P Salve Challenger series, from October 10 to 13.
The national selection committee, which met in Delhi on Saturday, named V V S Laxman captain of the India 'A' team and Dinesh Mongia captain of India 'B'.
Sourav Ganguly will lead India Seniors.
Announcing the teams, Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary S K Nair said Kumble has been advised four weeks' rest following a fitness report by Indian team physio John Gloster.
He did not specify Kumble's fitness problem but said the Karnataka bowler is under rehabilitation.
Nehra, who missed the Test series in Zimbabwe, is unavailable for six weeks, Nair added.
He said the two players and any bowler with a fitness problem would have to prove his recovery by playing in a domestic match.
Nair also said the new 'Super Sub rule' being tried out by the International Cricket Council in ODIs would be applied in the Challenger Series.
Tendulkar has been out of action since the home series against Pakistan in April. He underwent surgery on his left elbow in May and missed the recent tri-series in Sri Lanka and tour of Zimbabwe. The injury also forced him to opt out of next week's Super Series against world champions Australia after being named in the Rest of the World one-day and Test teams.
