Brad Hodge [ Images ] was unbeaten on 13 with Mike Hussey [ Images ] yet to score after Justin Langer (99), Ricky Ponting [ Images ] (56) and Matthew Hayden [ Images ] (47) lost their wickets.
West Indies had earlier made 405 in their first innings with Brian Lara [ Images ] contributing 226 to break Allan Border's [ Images ] world record for the most Test runs.
Lara started the day on 202, needing a further 12 runs to pass Border, and reached the milestone with a single off Glenn McGrath [ Images ] to a standing ovation at Adelaide Oval.
