England's Matthew Hoggard and Ashley Giles warmed up for the first Test against Pakistan with seven wickets between them to lead a fightback against the Pakistan A side on the first day of a three-day tour match in Lahore on Sunday.
Hoggard took 4-39 and Giles 3-14 as England, after being bowled out for 126 runs, reduced the local side to 127 for eight at the close with captain Hasan Raza top scoring with 34.
Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif finished with seven for 62.
Raza shared a valuable 60-run sixth-wicket stand with wicketkeeper Amin-ur-Rehman (32) to rescue his side from the shaky position of 58 for five.
The 23-year-old took several blows on his body as Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison tested him with some hostile bowling but he stood firm to enhance his chances of making the first Test team.
Hoggard was in prime form, swinging the ball as he rattled the local side with four wickets after lunch while Giles struck late in the day with three wickets in successive overs.
Hoggard picked up the wickets of Taufiq Umar (6), Faisal Athar (0), Shahid Yousuf (10) and Imran Farhat (23) while Giles had Amin caught by Flintoff at mid-wicket and than trapped Arshad Khan (0) and Raza leg before.
Raza faced 67 balls and hit four boundaries.
Hoggard, who failed to take a wicket in the first tour match in Rawalpindi, shattered test opener Umar's stumps at the total of nine and then next ball had Athar caught behind with a quick outswinger.
With the score at 29, he struck again when he bowled Yousuf and with the total at 46 he trapped Farhat leg before.
Earlier, Asif had exploited a responsive pitch to trigger another dismal England batting performance.
He took five wickets before lunch to leave England reeling on 76 for seven and added two more in the second session after a fightback from the England tailenders.
Ashley Giles (23) and Shaun Udal (21) put on 35 for the eighth wicket and last man Harmison scored 18 with four boundaries to liven up the innings.
Brief scores:
England 1st innings: 126 all out (S Udal 23, M Asif 7-62, S Nazir 2-18)
Pakistan A 1st innings: 127-8 (H Raza 34, Amin-ur-Rehman 32, M Hoggard 4-39, A Giles 3-14)
