Mohammed Kaif led Uttar Pradesh defeated Madhya Pradesh by 33 runs in a central zone Ranji Trophy one-day match in Indore on Sunday.
Chasing a target of 219 in 50 overs, Madhya Pradesh were all out for 185 in 41.1 overs.
Electing to field, MP made a good start when Sanjay Pandey claimed the wicket of opener Rohit Prakash (4) in the first over itself. Pandey delivered another blow in the third over clean bowling Jyoti Yadav (1) when the total was just seven.
Pandey got his third wicket in the ninth over when they dismissed Suresh Renna (16) to put the visitors in further trouble.
In the 12th over, UP suffered another jolt when Shantanu Pitre cleaned up Rahat Elahi (2).
Skipper Kaif (53, 4x8) then added 53 runs for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Aamir Khan (40 4x4) to give stability to the innings taking the total to 106.
Kaif and Praveen Kumar (40) added 59 runs for the sixth wicket before Yogesh Golwalkar claimed the prized wicket of Kaif.
In reply, MP began on a confident note adding 34 runs for the first wicket with Naman Ojha (12) and Amit Pal (16) playing comfortably.
However, newcomer Pal was caught by Kaif off R P Singh as MP lost their first wicket. MP then lost three quick wickets of Ojha, Amay Khurasia (0), Devendra Bundela (0) in the next two overs and were in deep trouble with only 35 runs on the board.
Both Khurasia and Bundela gave catches to wicketkeeper Mohammad Khan off R P Singh and Praveen Kumar.
Except for skipper Abbas Ali (53), Rahul Bakshi (31) and Shantanu Pitre (22) none of the other MP batsmen contributed much.
UP earned 4 points from the opening tie of the one-day competition.
