Mohinder Amarnath, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, says India captain Sourav Ganguly should soon emerge from the lean patch that he is going through.
Speaking to rediff.com in Delhi on Friday, Amarnath refused to comment when asked whether the time has come for Ganguly to quit as captain and concentrate on his batting."
"The best thing that Ganguly can do is to make sure of his place in the side by his performance," he said.
Talking about the ongoing One-Day Internationals between India and Pakistan, Amarnath said there is no logic in holding a six-match series.
"Normally you have a three, five or seven-match series in one-dayers, because then you have one team winning the series. But here [the ongoing India Pakistan one-day series] we have a six-match series and it may end up at 3-3.
"Maybe, the Indian cricket board and the Pakistani cricket board agreed to have an extra match to accommodate a certain state association," he added.
He found it "amusing" that some cricket writers have already started comparing Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Virender Sehwag after his swashbuckling innings of 148 in the second One-Day International in Visakhapatnam.
"Sehwag is a class batsman and he should not be compared with anyone else, because he has his own style of playing.
"Dhoni is an exciting player with tremendous potential and is a good wicketkeeper. But he has to learn a lot; he is a newcomer and will do well in years to come if he maintains his consistency and works hard," he said.
Will the presence of VVIP's during the Delhi match add to the pressure on the players?
" No, I don't think so. Whether [Pakistan President Pervez] Musharraf is watching the match with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on April 17 or not will in no way to add to the pressure. The players will play their own game," he said.
He was hopeful that the newly-laid pitch at the Ferozshah Kotla grounds will have even bounce and help both batsmen and bowlers so that Delhiites could watch an exciting final game in the series.
